I am a beach enthusiast on every level! I love to walk them, swim off them, meditate on them, collect fun objects on them, kayak, paddle board, dive…you name it…if it involves a beach and water…I am all in! I am especially grateful now-when travel is tough- to have access to beautiful Lake Michigan beaches walkable from my house. I don’t need an ocean…a great lake is really GREAT!
I have found myself spending many reflective moments at the water’s edge in the last few months. The glistening in the early morning water puts me at ease and more importantly gives me hope for the future. The lapping sounds of the waves deeply relax me. I watch in wonder at the symphony of perfect motion as waves hit the shoreline. I love it when the water is very still…it forces ME to get still…which is challenging in these stressful times. Upon occasion in the last few months I find the water’s edge brings tears…I am not sure why…maybe those ions in the beach air bring it all on. All I know is that a beautiful beach is my safe haven…my north star…if I need to get calm or centered I go there! I also keep a “bucket list” of beaches “click here” to see this year’s list. I have visited a few but love to learn about a new destination! https://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelersChoice-Beaches-cTop-g1
A few years ago I had a BIG birthday and I decided to celebrate with my girlfriends on my local beach. A “stay-cation” before it was fashionable! My family helped me decorate the beach at dawn with a tent and all the trimmings. I hired a make-up artist and a photographer to join in the fun to get us all camera ready. I had lunch delivered, created a cool playlist and we spent the afternoon frolicking and laughing and captured it all on film…we even shot a fun video. As a celebration of our friendship I gave each guest a beautiful framed photograph of themselves to remember the day.
I love a great opportunity for some fun styling….
The weather that September day was sublime…
My lovely girlfriends were really good sports and indulged my crazy ideas…
Being able to look back on these photographs for years to come was the best birthday gift I gave to myself…I wanted to do something memorable and celebrate somewhere personally meaningful that I would be able to revisit and think about that wonderful day every time I walk the shoreline…
Funny enough, most people think I jetted somewhere exotic with my friends in tow when they see these pictures…when I tell them it is a local Lake Michigan beach.. they look at me in surprise. The take away for all of us is sometimes there is no place like home…and for me…no place like a beach! xo Emily
